Painless Changes to Becoming a Better Manager

If you’re reading this article, congratulations! You have already shown a desire to improve, which is a great trait for managers—no matter how successful—to have. Keep reading for concrete, painless ways to improve your management skills.

Respond Quickly

If a coworker or employee requests information from you—whether by phone, in a meeting, or in an email—it is important to respond quickly. Saying “I’ll get back to you” and then never following up can lead to frustration from colleagues, even if it’s done without malice. Conversely, timely responses show that you care and are responsible. If you have trouble keeping up, try setting aside a certain block of your day—no matter how short—to respond to messages.

Give Feedback

Another element of good management is regularly providing feedback—not just during performance reviews or times of crisis, according to Business News Daily. Feedback can come in the form of praise: Employees who feel recognized for their work are more likely to stay engaged. It may also come in the form of critical feedback, which can be less comfortable but equally productive: Employees may not realize they are not performing up to the standards expected of them, and even if they do, they may need concrete suggestions on how to improve.

Wisely Use Your Power

A third way to improve your management skills is to be conscious of how you use your power. Like it or not, as a manager, you do hold power over the members of the team you manage. Ways you can wield that power constructively include:

• Delegating tasks to teammates whose skillsets and interests fit those tasks.

• Going to bat for your employees with company leadership when needed.

• Solving problems and conflicts as they arise. If no immediate fix is available, set up a plan for finding one.
